The short number
Moldova's state registry holds over 282,000 companies ever registered. Of those, almost 153,000 are active today, and the rest, around 129,000, have been struck off. In other words, nearly half of all companies ever opened in Moldova no longer exist.
Below are the numbers by legal form and by year, pulled from the data we keep current on Datero.md.
Active vs struck off
| Status | Count | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Active | ~152,975 | 54% |
| Struck off (liquidated) | ~129,331 | 46% |
| Total ever registered | ~282,306 | 100% |
Nearly half being struck off does not mean half the economy went bankrupt. Many strike-offs are administrative: a company that fails to file reports for three years running can be removed automatically, even if the owner simply forgot about it. I covered this separately in the guide on liquidated companies.
Which legal forms dominate
Moldova is a country of SRLs. More than half of all companies are limited liability companies, and if you add SRLs, sole traders and peasant farms together, you cover about 94% of the whole registry.
| Legal form | Count | Share |
|---|---|---|
| SRL (limited liability company) | ~155,400 | 55% |
| Sole trader (II) | ~94,500 | 33% |
| Peasant farm | ~16,900 | 6% |
| Joint-stock company (closed) | ~3,200 | 1% |
| Cooperatives (production + consumer) | ~3,600 | 1% |
| State and municipal enterprises | ~2,000 | <1% |
The remaining few thousand are rare forms: open joint-stock companies, public institutions, branches of foreign firms. If you wonder why a particular "company" has no financial statements, the answer is often its form: sole traders and peasant farms keep simplified accounts. See what the legal form and IDNO mean.
How many companies open each year
In recent years, between 7,000 and almost 10,000 new companies are registered annually. 2025 was a strong year, with almost 9,800 registrations.
| Year | Opened | Struck off |
|---|---|---|
| 2020 | 6,503 | 11,843 |
| 2021 | 7,424 | 6,556 |
| 2022 | 6,933 | 4,867 |
| 2023 | 7,715 | 8,605 |
| 2024 | 8,748 | 11,192 |
| 2025 | 9,780 | 10,243 |
Do more close than open?
In 2024 and 2025, yes: more companies were struck off than opened. In 2024, for example, 8,748 new companies were registered, but 11,192 were struck off.
Before you conclude that the economy is collapsing, keep two things in mind. First, many strike-offs are administrative cleanup of companies that hadn't operated for years. Second, the strike-off peaks (2020, 2024) often fall when the state runs registry cleanup campaigns, not when real businesses close. New registrations, by contrast, have grown steadily since 2022.
How to see the data by category
On Datero.md you can go beyond the headline numbers:
- Search for a specific company by IDNO or name and see its real status.
- Look at statistics and analytics by sector to see where business concentrates.
- If you're thinking of opening one, read the SRL registration guide.
