The Energy Sector Dominates the Ranking
The top four positions are all gas, oil, and electricity. The energy sector takes up nearly the entire top of the table.
MOLDOVAGAZ SA holds first place with 16.5 billion MDL in revenue but lost 323 million MDL. Gas prices ate up all the margin. The same issue hit TERMOELECTRICA SA (losses of 233 million MDL) and PETROM-MOLDOVA SRL (minus 69 million MDL).
On the other hand, ENERGOCOM SA and PREMIER ENERGY SRL turned a profit: 142.5 and 379.6 million MDL respectively. Not everyone in energy lost money — the business model and contract structure made all the difference.
Energy and oil companies in the top 20 generated over 60 billion MDL combined — more than half the entire ranking.
Retail and Trade: Solid Profitability
MOLDRETAIL GROUP SRL (Linella) sits at number 5 — 8.2 billion MDL in revenue and 309.5 million MDL in profit. METRO CASH & CARRY MOLDOVA SRL comes in at 15th with 3.0 billion MDL.
DITA ESTFARM SRL, a major pharmaceutical distributor, brought in 2.6 billion MDL with a profit of 203.7 million MDL. For distribution, that is an excellent margin.
Agriculture and Food Industry
FLOAREA SOARELUI SA from Balti posted the highest net profit in the entire ranking: 670.1 million MDL on 7.7 billion MDL in revenue. A margin of nearly 9% for a company this size is a serious result.
AGROFLORIS-NORD SRL and TRANS OIL REFINERY SRL are also in the top 20. Agriculture continues to be a strong driver of Moldova's economy.
Telecommunications: High Profit, Moderate Revenue
ORANGE MOLDOVA SA — 14th by revenue (3.1 billion MDL), but second in net profit across the ranking: 442.1 million MDL. A 14% margin. Telecom remains one of the most profitable sectors in Moldova — no surprises there.
Surprises and Observations
A few companies in the ranking you might not expect to see:
- LOTERIA NATIONALA A MOLDOVEI SA at number 8 with 7.1 billion MDL. The national lottery — 8th in the entire country.
- NAFTATRANS SRL at number 12: profit of 320.8 million MDL on 4.1 billion MDL in revenue. One of the most profitable companies on the list.
- FIRMA AVANTE SRL at number 13, with 160.9 million MDL in profit.
Companies with Losses: A Systemic Issue?
Three companies in the top 20 reported losses in 2022: MOLDOVAGAZ SA, PETROM-MOLDOVA SRL, and TERMOELECTRICA SA. All three are from the energy sector — the sector with the highest revenue but also the most exposed to external shocks.
Their combined losses: over 625 million MDL. Money that ultimately gets reflected in the tariffs we all pay.
